Jordan's opposition Muslim Brotherhood and pro-reform movements calling for change on Sunday accused security authorities of being behind an attack on prominent opposition leader Leith Shbeilat, dpa reported.

Shbeilat, who has been advocating for a constitutional monarchy, was stoned while speaking at a rally in the Jerash area, 30 kilometres north of the capital Amman on Saturday.

According to media reports, the activist was unharmed but several others were injured.

The incident drew sharp criticism from the Islamic-led opposition and pro-reform movements, who organized protests in several localities in response.

"What happened proves that the country's main institutions have lost their credibility and the ability to carry out their constitutional duties, leaving the decision-making to people of security mentality," said Zaki Bani Rsheid, head of the Political Department at the Islamic Action Front (IAF), the policial arm of the Muslim Brotherhood.

He charged that the authorities were resorting to "mob tactics and provocation" to derail the efforts of those seeking political reform.

Demonstrators across Jordan on Friday called for the scrapping of Prime Minister Marouf Bakhit's cabinet and the dissolution of the lower house of parliament.
