USA, Washington, August 11 / Trend N. Bogdanova /

Azerbaijan can play a more important role in the civil operations in Afghanistan, U.S terrorism and international security analyst Thomas Sanderson said.

"Azerbaijan can play positive role in terms of rebuilding infrastructure, helping to provide Afghanis normal life facilities", Deputy Director and Senior Fellow of CSIS on Transnational Threats Project Sanderson told Trend .

Sanderson said that right now there is a need in as much help as possible in Afghanistan.

"While I been in Afghanistan I have visited Mazar-e-Sharif, (in the north of Afghanistan and some 400 kilometers northwest of Kabul) where Azerbaijani soldiers are serving, I saw the importance of those operations and I believe Azerbaijan's role there can increase", he said.

Azerbaijan's role in additional strategic operations can increase, Sanderson said. According to Sanderson, Azerbaijan and Georgia's territory is useful for flies to Afghanistan.

"And also, both Georgia and Azerbaijan can actively participate in the on land operations by using sea ports of Poti and Aktau", he said.

According to Sanderson, Central Asia is playing a bigger role in Afghanistan in comparison with South Caucasus.

"But if speaking of Turkmenistan, we can say that it's easier to work with countries like Azerbaijan. We believe that the USA can use more of Azerbaijan's military and civil potential in Afghanistan - the more help is there, the better", U.S expert said.

U.S expert also mentioned that he and his colleagues are planning a visit later this year to Azerbaijan to get to know more about the country and the region.
