The Azerbaijani President's humane and merciful step should not be used for political speculations, said the head of department for work with law-enforcement agencies of the Presidential Administration of Azerbaijan Fuad Alesgerov.
The former Azerbaijani president Ayaz Mutallibov was allowed to come to Baku to attend the funeral of his son.
Alesgerov said already on Jule 22, Mutallibov appealed to the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev to create conditions for his return to the country because of serious illness of his son. "Mr. President, being guided by the principle of humanism, which is one of the principles of the state policy and national traditions of our people, gave consent to Mutallibov's return because of serious illness of his son.
Then Mutallibov was unable to come to Azerbaijan, but now he returned to the country in connection with the death of his son. Azerbaijan's embassy in Russia has provided him a certificate of return in order to be able to return to the country. Mutallibov expressed gratitude to the President for his humane step," said Alesgerov.
He said conditions were created for Mutallibov to attend the funeral ceremony.
"Purely upon humanity, in such a sad situation, the people should be given the opportunity to experience their grief. Using this sorrowful time and the merciful step taken by the Azerbaijan President in this regard for any political speculations at least means showing disrespect to our national traditions," said Alesgerov.
"As for the criminal case with regards to Mutallibov, indeed, a criminal case exists, and it does not take a political character. The accusation with regards to Mutallibov was made upon concrete articles of the Criminal Code," said Alesgerov.
He also said that the first criminal case in connection with the events of 20 January and Khojaly events, upon which Mutallibov was accused, was filed in the ruling period of the Popular Front.
Mutallibov is also accused of preparation for the violent seizure of power and committing other serious crimes. Concrete persons have already been convicted for these crimes.
"However, in connection with Mutallibov's appeal to the President of Azerbaijan, the execution of decision to arrest Mutallibov has been temporarily suspended," he added.
