Deficit on balance of services in Azerbaijan increases by over 70 per cent

Counter service, which amounted to $8.435 billion took one of the leading places during 2011 in the external economic relations of Azerbaijan, the balance of payments posted on the website of the Central Bank of Azerbaijan (CBA) said.

Non-residents provided services worth more than $5.715 billion to residents of Azerbaijan. Residents of Azerbaijan provided services worth more than $2.719 billion to those of foreign countries. Thus, the balance of services was negative and amounted to $2.995 billion, while in 2010 the deficit stood at $1.773 billion.

In the balance of counter services 20.5 per cent accounted for transportation services of which the total amounted to more than $1.727 billion. Of these, 55.5 per cent fell to being used by Azerbaijani residents of the transport systems of foreign countries. The cost of the same services provided by Azerbaijani residents to non-residents amounted to $768.5 million.

During the last year the cost of tourist services provided to foreigners visiting Azerbaijan, exceeded 1.287 billion. Some 36.1 per cent are provided to non-residents who visited Azerbaijan on business trips.

In turn, the tourism services provided to residents of Azerbaijan and foreign governments and compared with the 2010's increased 2.2 times and amounted to 1.689 billion dollars. Of these, 62.3 per cent of funds spent on services account for a personal nature.

As a result, during 2011 the share of counter service in the total export-import operations of Azerbaijan with foreign countries was 15.9 per cent.
