The Azerbaijan Caspian Shipping Company (ASCO) continues the work to reduce emissions of industrial and domestic waste, ASCO spokesperson Mehman Mehdiyev told Trend.
“ASCO cooperates with many organizations that provide various types of services, namely, the removal, recycling and processing of garbage and waste,” said Mehdiyev. “One of them, Azerbaycanin Temiz Texnologiyalari (Azerbaijan’s clean technologies) LLC, is engaged in the removal and recycling of all types of waste. Clean City OJSC provides us with recycling only household waste. EL-Oil LLC removes, utilizes and processes used oils and oil sludge.”
“Baku International Sea Trade Port CJSC plays a significant role in ensuring the removal of all types of garbage from ships,” ASCO spokesperson noted. “Kommunal Xidmetler Muessisesi (Communal services facility) LLC removes and utilizes only everyday waste. Azersu LLC, in cooperation with ASCO, is engaged in the disposal of wastewater. SER Denizcilik (SER shipping) LLC removes and processes metal, as well as decommissioned vessels for sale in the secondary market. Baku Steel Company LLC provides measures for the export and processing of metal.”
According to the company's waste collection report for 2019, about 230,000 tons of various garbage and waste were removed last year, added Mehdiyev.
“Oil sludge that emerged at the bottom of tanks and which is included in the category of hazardous waste amounted to 56.6 tons,” ASCO spokesperson noted. “Rusty metal, paints, gravel and sand mixture amounted to 1,379 tons. Small and medium objects disposed of from the surface of the sea amounted to about 21.3 tons. Wastewater disposed of from ships amounted to about 98,222 tons. Domestic wastewater pumped from the coast amounted to 109,745 tons. Oil water, which is part of hazardous waste, pumped from ships amounted to 12,703 tons.”
“Oil water pumped from the coast amounted to 689 tons,” said Mehdiyev. “Lubricating oils, which are part of hazardous waste removed from ships, amounted to 178 tons. Lubricating oils that are part of hazardous waste disposed of from the coast amounted to about 8 tons. Oily rags, which are part of hazardous waste, disposed of from ships amounted to about 25.5 tons. Oily rags disposed of from the coast amounted to about 65.3 tons.”
“Some 11,399 tons of ferrous metals were withdrawn from ships, 4,218 tons of ferrous metals were disposed from the coast,” the spokesman added. “Sixty-three tons of non-ferrous metals were withdrawn from ships, about 25.5 tons of non-ferrous metals were transported from the sea coast.”
“About 51.3 tons of wood waste were disposed from ships, about 372.5 tons of wood waste were disposed from the coast,” Mehdiyev said. “Some 46.7 tons of polymer-based waste and plastics were disposed from ships, about 243 tons of polymer-based waste and plastics were transported from the sea coast.”
“Some 244 tons of food waste were disposed from ships while 1,013 tons from the coast,” Mehdiev said. “About 109 tons of sulfur anhydride, polluting the atmosphere were disposed from ships. Some 203.7 tons of nitric oxide polluting the atmosphere were transported from ships.”
“Besides the abovementioned garbage, partner companies took out about 680 tons of other types of waste,” spokesman added.
“The Azerbaijan Caspian Shipping Company annually sets relevant goals and tasks in accordance with international standards and the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL 73/78), one of which is to ensure energy efficiency on ships and onshore facilities, which directly affects the global climate change,” Mehdiyev said. “It includes a number of activities related to solving some problems, namely, reducing the consumption of thermal energy and electricity on ships and onshore facilities and reducing harmful emissions into the atmosphere - CO2, SOX, CO, NOX, CH, Pm (soot)."
The Azerbaijan Caspian Shipping Company is a shipping company that has the biggest fleet in the Caspian Sea. All this made it possible to develop security management system procedures and implement them to achieve the goals and tasks set for the company.
