(IRIBNews) - Representative of the United Nations Secretary General for Afghanistan Tom Koenigs and Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki Tuesday evening reviewed issues of mutual interest.
Noting the Iranian and Afghan nations' cultural links, Mottaki said stability and progress for Afghanistan would play an important role in maintaining security in Iran.
Urging the United Nations to play a more active role in Afghan affairs, he referred to the continuing presence of foreign forces in Afghanistan as a bitter experience for the West, reports Trend.
Washington failed in its goal of establishing peace and security in the war-torn Afghanistan, he said, and insisted that regional cooperation and UN efforts were the only means of bringing stability to that country.
Voicing Iran's support for UN moves to rebuild Afghanistan, Mottaki said
Tehran was ready to participate in reconstruction and development projects in that country under the leadership of the UN.
For his part, Koenigs lauded the effective role played by the Islamic Republic of Iran in bringing Afghanistan back on its feet after decades of instability.
Referring to the global anti-drug campaign and the role Iran has played in this regard, he said Iran is one of the most successful countries in the battle against drug trafficking.
Koenigs further appreciated Iran's efforts in coordination with United Nations bodies to bring peace and security in Afghanistan.
Koenigs arrived in Tehran on Monday for a two-day visit to discuss expansion of Tehran-Kabul development activities and continuing cooperation to strengthen security and stability in the country.
