Georgia Demands EU, NATO to Confirm Use of Cluster Bombs by Russia

Georgia, Tbilisi, 15 August / Trend corr. N.Kirtskhalia / Georgia demands from EU and NATO to send international experts to Georgia to confirm that Russia has used banned cluster bombs. Revaz Beshidze, Georgian Ambassador in NATO, said to journalists that Georgia had evidences that Russia used cluster bombs in the country.

"We ask to send experts to the region. We will submit experts the documents confirming use of banned cluster bombs by Russia," Beshidze said.

The Human Rights Watch (HRW) stated on 14 August that investigators revealed that Russian Air Forces dropped cluster bombs to populated premises in Georgia, 11 people dead and tens were wound as a result.

On 12 August, Russian aircrafts dropped cluster RBK-250 bombs in the Ruisi village in Karelsk region (central Georgia), three people died as a result. At the same day, eight people died including a journalist from Holland and tens were wound as a result of cluster attack, HRW reported.

"Cluster bombs kill indiscriminately, therefore most states banned use of the bomb," Mark Garlasko, a military expert in HRW said. Usage of cluster bombs is dangerous for people and insults international attempts attached to prevent human catastrophe, Garlasko said.
