BAKU, Azerbaijan, August 30. Kazakhstan’s President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has congratulated the people of Kazakhstan on the occasion of Constitution Day in a recent address, Trend reports.
Tokayev emphasized the significant democratic advancements achieved through the 2022 constitutional reform. The June 2022 referendum, which saw overwhelming public support, marked a pivotal shift towards strengthening the rule of law and enhancing democratic processes in the country.
"As a result of the constitutional reform of 2022, a comprehensive democratization process was launched in the country, and conditions were created for the modernization of the political system. The role of human rights institutions was strengthened, and the status of the human rights ombudsman was raised. The Constitutional Court was created, which today fully contributes to the establishment of the rule of law. The Constitution has strengthened its function of ensuring law and order, on which a fair and harmonious society is based," the document says.
The President highlighted the constitution's role as a robust foundation for Kazakhstan's statehood and its guarantee of progressive and stable development. He reiterated that the ongoing transformations aim to improve the well-being of the people, with a focus on respect for the constitution as a manifestation of civic responsibility and true patriotism.
"Defining the foundations of the life of the state and society, the constitution puts the interests, rights, and freedoms of citizens at the forefront. That is why the goal of all reforms carried out in Kazakhstan is the well-being of the people. Respect and strict observance of the basic law are a clear manifestation of high civic responsibility and true patriotism. I am convinced that, relying on the enduring values of the constitution, we will build a fair Kazakhstan - a state of equal opportunities for all," Tokayev said.
Constitution Day, celebrated on August 30, is a key national holiday in Kazakhstan, commemorating the adoption of the constitution in a 1995 referendum. On June 5, 2022, a referendum was held in Kazakhstan to amend the constitution, which was supported by more than 77 percent of citizens. Additionally, the amendments abolished the death penalty and removed provisions related to the status of former President Nursultan Nazarbayev.
