Egyptians celebrated Tuesday their first Eid al-Fitr, one of the major Muslim festivals, without long-serving president Hosny Mubarak, dpa reported.
"The Eid is better without Mubarak," Muslim preacher Mazhar Shahin told thousands of Egyptians gathering in Cairo's iconic Tahrir Square to offer special prayers marking the Eid.
Mubarak was forced to step down in February after 18 days of massive protests.
"Egypt's next president has to learn a lesson from what happened to his predecessor and to realize that the Egyptian people will no longer tolerate injustice," added Shahin.
Over the past 30 years, state television used to show live clips of Mubarak attending Eid prayers.
On Tuesday, the television broadcast the prayers from Tahrir Square, which was the focal point of anti-Mubarak protests.
A Cairo court is to resume on September 5 the trial of Mubarak on charges of ordering the killing of protesters and corruption.
