Security forces in Egypt have foiled two attempts to smuggle around 11,000 litres of diesel into the Gaza Strip in the past 24 hours, security sources said on Tuesday.
Security forces confiscated two trucks containing 4,000 litres of diesel that were about to be smuggled through underground tunnels, sources told dpa. Four more trucks carrying more than 7,000 litres were stopped later.
Earlier this month, Gaza's only power plant stopped working due to a severe fuel shortage. Last week, Egypt increased its power supply to the Gaza Strip from 17 to 22 megawatts.
Hundreds of tunnels run under the frontier between the Gaza Strip and Egypt's Sinai peninsula. They are used to smuggle goods into the Israeli-blockaded enclave.
Israel has in the past accused Egypt not doing enough to stop the smuggling of arms across its border, especially since Hosny Mubarak was ousted as president.
