Syria denies departure of UN inspectors

Arab World Materials 31 August 2013 03:08 (UTC +04:00)

Syria's Foreign Ministry on Friday denied the UN investigation team on chemical weapon use had left the country as claimed by some media reports, the state TV reported.

"The investigators haven't decided to leave Damascus on Friday or Saturday," the statement said, noting that only UN disarmament chief Angela Kane has left the country, Xinhua reported.

The UN inspectors will tender a preliminary report once they have completed the probe this weekend.

The team, led by Swedish specialist Ake Sellstrom, was initially set to investigate the alleged March-19 chemical attacks on Khan al-Asal in the northern province of Aleppo and two other undisclosed sites.

They later had to travel to the Damascus suburb of Ghouta, where chemical weapons were allegedly used on Aug. 21 while they were in Syria, to collect evidence.
