( dpa )- The United States said Monday it wants Iraq and Iran to have good relations after Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad made the first ever visit of an Iranian head to state to Baghdad.
But Gordon Johndroe, a spokesman for the White House's National Security Council, said Iran continues to supply weapons and provide other support to militants responsible for attacks on US troops and determined to destabilize the Iraqi government.
"We continue to intercept equipment and people coming in from Iran into Iraq with no other purpose but for the killing of innocent Americans and innocent Iraqis, and the destabilization of that country," Jondroe said.
He rebuffed Ahmadinejad's denial while in the Iraqi capital that his country was supporting the militants.
"Nice words for him to say in the middle of Baghdad, but the facts on the ground prove otherwise," Johndroe said.
