Citing health concerns, Paul Newman stepped down Friday as the director of a play based on the John Steinbeck classic Of Mice and Men, the dpa reported.

Newman, 83, was to have made his stage directorial debut in October with the play at a regional theatre in Connecticut where his wife Joan Woodward is the artistic director. In the announcement no details were given on the Hollywood movie star's health problems.

Earlier in the year, the National Enquirer reported that the star of movies such as The Sting and Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid had undergone surgery for cancer.
