Ron Paul, 72, the conservative Republican, physician and libertarian who barely registered in the media spotlight, Thursday night ended his bid for the party's presidential nomination.

Paul's presence on the political scene was hugely overshadowed by the earlyh lead taken by Senator John McCain in sealing the presumptive Republican Party nomination for the presidency.

In a letter to his supporters posted on a new website, Ron Paul's Campaign for Liberty, the candidate said his message had found strong echo in the US electorate.

He said he planned to continue his message by designing "materials for home-schoolers" - parents who teach their children at hime - with the help of his supporters, and to build a precinct network to "make our presence felt at every level of government."

He said it was "the most ambitious venture" of his political career.

He said he and the delegates he won during the primary contests would make their presence felt at the formal Republican nominating convention in St. Paul, Minnesota, in early September, where he plans to hold a massive rally outside of the formal proceedings, dpa reported.
