International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) President Roberto Kobeh Gonzalez of Mexico said Tuesday in New York that European skies were now safe for aircraft, as authorities on the continent begin to lift flight restrictions.
European flight safety officials have begun reopening airspace other their countries as the clouds of ash from a volcanic eruption in Iceland have begun to ease. "That means that it is safe," Kobeh Gonzalez said.
He answered questions from reporters after a meeting at United Nations headquarters with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, DPA reported.
