Afghan President Hamid Karzai said Thursday his country would achieve peace when there is peace in Pakistan, Xinhua reported.

At a luncheon hosted in his honor by Pakistani Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, Karzai said "Afghanistan will be peaceful and prosperous when there is peace and prosperity in Pakistan and when the two countries work together towards that common objectives."

Karzai, leading a high level delegation, arrived in Islamabad on Wednesday on a two-day state visit and held talks with Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari and the army chief on security issues.

"If the two countries work together, the day is not far off when they would be absolute peace and absolute prosperity in both countries. Then the people will live happily together," the Afghan president said.

Referring to the devastating floods in Pakistan, he said the floods have caused sufferings and sorrow but he is confident that Pakistan has the resilience and strength to overcome the challenge.

On the occasion, Gilani said Islamabad supports Kabul's efforts for peace and stability and national reconciliation plan. "The successful holding of Kabul peace Jirga is an important endeavor of the government to usher in a new era in the region," he said.

"Both Pakistan and Afghanistan have suffered immensely from terrorism and extremism. We are resolutely determined to eradicate this menace from our region," Gilani said.

"It is for the people of Afghanistan themselves to decide their future. Pakistan will be happy to assist, if so required," he said, adding that an Afghan-led process holds the only promise for a durable solution.
