It is expected to take more than 30 years to decommission damaged reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station in north-eastern Japan, local media reported Friday, citing a draft report by a government panel, DPA reported.

The plant suffered meltdowns at three reactors after it was crippled by a magnitude-9 earthquake and tsunami on March 11. It has been leaking radioactive substances into the environment ever since.

The panel from the Japan Atomic Energy Commission also said it would take at least 10 years to start collecting melted fuels inside the damaged reactors 1 to 3, while work to remove fuel remaining in the spent nuclear fuel pools should start in 2015, the Nikkei business daily said.

The decommissioning process will start as early as next year by setting up cranes and building containers to store fuel, the Nikkei said.

The draft was submitted Friday to a committee on medium- and long-term decommissioning measures and was expected to be finalized later this year.
