Turkey celebrates the victory of democracy today, said Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, speaking after the announcement of the initial results of the referendum, CNN Turk reported.
According to the prime minister, 58% voted for changes in the referendum, and it is a great victory for the people of Turkey.
"Faith in democracy, a desire for democracy has made themselves felt once again. 77 percent of the population participated in the referendum. And everybody won today, either who voted "yes", or those who voted "no", Erdogan said.
Turkish electors ended casting votes in the referendum on a constitutional amendment package on Sunday.
The citizens voted in 32 provinces in east of Turkey between 07.00 a.m -4.00 p.m. and in 49 provinces in west of Turkey in 08.00 a.m. - 5.00 p.m.
Package of constitutional amendments adopted in May by the Parliament, making 26 changes to the existing constitution.
They relate to the reform of the justice system, particularly the Constitutional Court and the Supreme Council of Judges and Prosecutors, provide the possibility of instituting criminal proceedings against the military to civilian courts, delegate the responsibility for filing a case for the dissolution of political parties from the Court of Appeal of the Parliament.
The constitutional reform also introduces the institution of Ombudsman.
