Azerbaijan, Baku, Dec. 22 / Trend , A.Huseynbala /

This year characterizes many positive changes in Azerbaijani broadcasting, chairman of Azerbaijani National Television and Radio Council said.

Two regional television channels opened in 2009. These are El TV in Yevlakh and Sheki TV. In addition, ATV international began broadcasting this year, National Council Chairman Nushirevan Maharramli told Trend News.

Eight republican, fourteen regional and thirteen cable television channels operate in Azerbaijan.

According to Maharramli, the situation in Azerbaijani broadcasting space became the subject of serious discussion in society this year.

Presidential Administration Head-of-staff Academician Ramiz Mehdiyev's article and numerous discussions in this regard have attracted great public attention to the television. This is quite normal. The broadcasting should be constantly in the public spotlight," he said.

Much should be done in the field of television and radio. "I think increaseed attention to this area in 2009 will lead to qualitative changes," Maharramli said.

With regard to possible broadcasting of any regional television channel throughout the country in future, Maharramli said that from a practical point of view it is possible.

"There are a lot of similar facts in the world. But due to the fact that Azerbaijan is not too great for its territory and population, issues related to advertising and audience should be taken into account. I think it is not worth hurrying up with this issue," he said.

First of all it is necessary for regional channels to reach the appropriate level, both in logistics and human resources, and the quality of broadcasting, he underscored.

Regarding forecasts for 2010 Maharramli said that it is planned to increase the number of educational programs on TV channels. "We expect reducing the number of show programs and increasing the number of educational programs," he noted.

Maharramli did not rule out opening new channels, but said there is no necessary for it," he said.
