Despite the existing problems, the country's energy sector is developing and several strategic projects will be launched next year, Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia Natia Turnava said, Trend reports with reference to Georgian media outlets.
According to the minister, six new hydropower plants (HPPs) with a total capacity of 58 MW were put into operation in 2019 with a total investment of up to $80 million.
“Next year, it is planned to commission 14 new HPPs and one thermal power plant with a total capacity of up to 500 MW. The Shuakhevi HPP will be commissioned; in addition, the construction of the Namahvani HPP will begin, and the Nenskra HPP will enter the main stage of construction,” said Turnava.
In 2020, it is also planned to begin construction of 13 new facilities, including eight HPPs.
“During the construction of each project, more and more attention is paid to the social needs of the population and environmental impact assessment,” Turnava said.
