BAKU, Azerbaijan, October 29. A total of 32 new power plants are currently under construction in Azerbaijan's Karabakh and Eastern Zangezur, a representative of the Green Energy Power Plant LLC Emil Ibadov said at the ceremony of signing a memorandum with the COP29 Azerbaijan Operating Company, Trend reports.

"At present, we are building 32 new power plants in Karabakh and Eastern Zangezur, with a total capacity of 270 megawatts. These stations will fully supply Karabakh and Eastern Zangezur with green energy. The surplus green energy will be exported abroad," he said.

According to statistics, Azerbaijan's technical potential for renewable energy sources is estimated at 135 gigawatts on land and 157 gigawatts in the Caspian Sea region belonging to Azerbaijan. The economic potential for renewable energy stands at 27 gigawatts, including 3,000 megawatts from wind energy, 23,000 megawatts from solar energy, and 380,000 megawatts from bioenergy. The potential from mountain rivers is estimated at 520 megawatts.

Recent assessments indicate that the Karabakh and Eastern Zangazur regions have a solar and wind energy potential of 10 gigawatts. The Gubadli, Zangilan, Jabrayil, Khojavend, and Fuzuli districts offer favorable conditions for harnessing solar energy, with a technical potential exceeding 7,200 megawatts.

Additionally, preliminary forecasts estimate that the technical potential for wind energy in the mountainous areas of Lachin and Kalbajar districts could reach 2,000 megawatts.
