Iran observes rise in cargo handling at ports of Hormozgan Province

BAKU, Azerbaijan, October 17. The volume of cargo loaded and unloaded at the ports of Iran’s Hormozgan Province, located in the south of the country, increased by 8.1 percent in the first six months of the current Iranian year (March 21 through September 22, 2023), compared to the same period last year, Director General of Hormozgan Province Ports and Maritime Department Hossein Abbasnejad said, Trend reports.

The director general stated that the total cargo handled by the ports of the southern province, which included Shahid Rajaee port with 41.2 million tons of cargo, amounted to 53.2 million tons in the six-month period.

Abbasnejad also noted that the container traffic at the province’s ports increased by 8.3 percent year-on-year, reaching 1.2 million TEU containers.

He added that 55,378 ships with less than 1,000 tons of capacity and 2,815 ships with more than 1,000 tons of capacity berthed at the port of the province during this period.

In total, approximately 112 million tons of oil and non-oil products were loaded and unloaded at Iranian ports in the first half of the current Iranian year (March 21 through September 22, 2023), which is an increase of 3 percent compared to the same period last year.

Currently, the annual capacity of Iranian ports is around 240 million tons. Iran is taking steps to increase this capacity to 300 million tons.
