A Filipino tried to hang herself with her bra in a police cell in Hong Kong after being arrested for allegedly stealing from her employer, police said Monday, the dpa reported.
The 23-year-old woman was taken into custody Saturday after being accused by her male employer of stealing 3,000 Hong Kong dollars (384 US dollars) from his house in Hong Kong's Tsing Yi district.
The maid was found semi-conscious in a detention cell Sunday after attempting to hang herself. She was Monday recovering in Hong Kong's Princess Margaret Hospital, a police spokesman said.
More than 200,000 women from the Philippines, Indonesia and Thailand work as live-in maids for Hong Kong families, earning a government-set minimum wage of around 420 US dollars a month.
