Four civilians were killed on Wednesday at a Russian army base when a container of powder ignited spontaneously as they were trying to defuse it, the news agency Interfax reported.
A commission was to investigate the accident, which took place at a base around 450 kilometres south-east of the capital Moscow, according to the Defence Ministry. All of those killed were women, DPA reported.
Aging munitions and weaponry have led to repeated cases of people being injured or killed in accidents at Russian bases.
