Azerbaijan, Baku, August 17 / Trend J. Babayeva /
Azerbaijani opposition National Independence Party prepares to discuss proposals on the establishment of a coalition on the eve of the municipal elections in Azerbaijan.
"Most political organizations have a break for the summer season. Even society is not very active. Discussions will be launched in September. The party will appraise proposals from other political organizations concerning the establishment of a coalition," the Party's Press and Propaganda Secretary, Ali Orujev, told Trend on August 17.
Municipal elections in Azerbaijan are scheduled for December 2009.
Orujev said that operations held for the sake of imitating a coalition establishment can damage joint activity and society's faith in the unity. "Therefore, we will try to come to an agreement with political parties whose position and principles coincide with ours," he said.
Regarding the party's meeting, a representative of the National Independence Party said that a political council must determine the date and venue of the meeting. "It is likely that a meeting of the supreme agencies of the party will be held before municipal elections," Orujev said.
The Azerbaijani National Independence Party was established in 1992. It is the first party in Azerbaijan to have passed state registration. Etibar Mammdov was the founder and Chairman of the Party until late 2004. At present, Mammadov is Deputy Chairman of the International Democratic Union.
