The Azerbaijani parliamentary committee will discuss amendments and additions to the Electoral Code, which was proposed by the union uniting several Azerbaijani opposition parties.
Under the internal charter of the Parliament, the bill was submitted for discussion in the Committee on Law Policy and State Building. However, I believe there is no need to make amendments and additions to the existing Electoral," head of the parliamentary administration, Sefa Mirzayev, told Trend on Sept.28.
The parties entering the Civil Movement for Karabakh and the Republic submitted to the parliamentary apparatus proposals on making 200 amendments and additions to the Electoral Code on the eve of municipal elections.
Azerbaijan will hold municipal elections in December 2009.
Azerbaijan has held municipal elections before, in 1999 and 2004.
Azerbaijani Parliament adopted a law on the unification of municipalities. Under this law, the number of municipalities decreased from 2,757 to 1,766.
According to Mirzayev, there is no need to make any amendments to the legislation for the participation of the opposition in the municipal elections as a bloc.
"The Azerbaijani Electoral Code is adequately allows to hold free, democratic and transparent elections," Mirzayev added.
The Civil Movement for Karabakh and the Republic was established on the eve of the referendum held on March 18. The Popular Front of Azerbaijan, the Citizen and Development Party, the Liberal Party, the Democratic Party and the Musavat and Umid parties, as well as a number of public organizations, are represented in the group.
