Public constitutional commission: Draft of Georgia’s new constitution contains threat to Georgia's statehood

Georgia, Tbilisi, Sept.15 / Trend, N.Kirtskhalia /

Georgia's public constitutional commission has called for the withdrawal from parliament of a draft of a new constitution for the country, saying that "it contains a threat to Georgian statehood."

According to the commission, amendments to the constitution are not in the public interest, and public opinion on the draft has not been researched.

In the submitted draft the executive branch is torn in two, creating a difficult and dangerous situation in the country, the commission believes. It also said that the amendments will weaken parliament and deprive it of control over the executive branch.

Expert on constitutional affairs Vakhtang Khmaladze said the new constitution could lead to a prolonged political crisis in the country. He called the draft "an attempt to preserve power" by the current political forces.

The members of the public constitutional commission are to discuss the matter with the Venetian Commission.
