By Sadraddin Aghjayev – Trend:

Director General of the Baku International Sea Trade Port Taleh Ziyadov held an online meeting with local and foreign experts and scientists of the Central Asian Forum of the UK University of Cambridge on the topic ‘Prospects for Regional Development and Cooperation’, Trend reports referring to a source in the port.

During the meeting, Ziyadov spoke about the opening of new opportunities in the South Caucasus region due to the victory of Azerbaijan in the Patriotic War (from late Sept. through early Nov.2020, ending with liberation of its Armenian-occupied territories), which in turn will contribute to the development of the transport sector.

"The past year was very successful for the Baku port, and in January-early February 2021, its cargo turnover grew by 20 percent,” he added.

The director general also noted that the share of transit cargo last year amounted to 87 percent of the total turnover.

"Compared to 2015, this means fivefold increase in shipment of large-capacity vehicles (TIR), three-time growth in shipment of containers and 3.5-time growth in cargo handling at the dry cargo terminal, which is a record in recent years," said Ziyadov.

As he pointed out, Turkey's third export train arrived at the Baku port on February 6, 2021.

"The train with medical and chemical products was loaded onto the Beket-Ata feeder ship in the Baku port in six hours and sent to the Aktau (Kazakhstan) port," he said.

Within the Memorandum of Understanding signed between the Baku port, the Austrian ‘OBB Rail Cargo Group’ and the Netherlands ‘Venlo Logistics Hub’ in 2019, it’s planned to transport goods from Europe to China and back.

"The first freight train from China has already arrived in Europe through the Baku port, and new freight trains are expected to be sent from Venlo (Netherlands) to China also through the port in the near future," summed up Ziyadov.
