ASTANA, Kazakhstan, November 2. The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) is developing a sustainable transport system in Kazakhstan by supporting a tram fleet modernization program in the city of Pavlodar, Trend reports.
To this end, the EBRD will allocate up to 10 million euro for the company managing the trams in Pavlodar, assisting this major municipality in northeastern Kazakhstan in acquiring up to 25 energy-efficient trams. The project will be co-financed with a 4 million euro loan from the Clean Technology Fund.
The new trams will also operate on battery power, allowing them to continue running during power outages, thereby minimizing traffic congestion. The introduction of these trams will also help expand the existing network without the need for additional overhead lines.
As part of the project, the tram company will conduct awareness campaigns to improve safety for female tram drivers and passengers.
To date, the EBRD has invested 10 billion euro in 328 projects in Kazakhstan, with most of these funds supporting private entrepreneurship.
