Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has underlined national reconciliation and free elections as the main components of a basic solution to the Arab country's crisis, PressTV reported.

"National understanding which can lead to free elections is the [sole] lasting and basic solution to the Syrian problem," Ahmadinejad told reporters at Mehrabad International Airport on Saturday upon his return from a visit to Indonesia and Vietnam.

The Iranian president noted that military option could not be a solution to the Syrian crisis, as the winning party will not be able to guarantee the country's security on its own.

Syria has been the scene of unrest since March 2011 and many people, including large numbers of army and security personnel, have been killed in the turmoil.

Iran has repeatedly underlined national reconciliation and free elections as the solution to the Syria unrest.

Tehran has also expressed readiness to host talks between the Syrian government and opposition in a bid to end the violence in the Arab nation.
