The White House Saturday said the Arab League's decision to support a no-fly zone over Libya "strengthens the international pressure" on Libyan leader Moamer Qaddafi, dpa reported.

The Arab League called on the United Nations Security Council to impose the no-fly zone in an effort to protect civilians in the North African country.

The resolution, which came after a six-hour meeting of Arab foreign ministers in Cairo, also called for the League to hold dialogue with the opposition Libyan National Council.

The White House press secretary said the Arab League's decision strengthened support "for the Libyan people."

"The international community is unified in sending a clear message that the violence in Libya must stop, and that the Gaddafi regime must be held accountable," the press secretary said.

"The United States will continue to advance our efforts to pressure Gaddafi, to support the Libyan opposition, and to prepare for all contingencies, in close coordination with our international partners."
