ASTANA, Kazakhstan, April 16. The Minister of Energy of Kazakhstan Almassadam Satkaliyev has held a meeting with representatives of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), Trend reports.
During the meeting, the minister informed the interlocutors that the country aims to intensify efforts to reduce methane emissions and called on the international institute to take part in this process.
"Overall, we are seeing a downward trend in greenhouse gases in the country's energy sector. Thus, over five years, methane emissions in the energy sector decreased by 1.2 million tons of CO2 equivalent. At this stage, we are ready to intensify work in this direction," the minister said.
In addition to this, Satkaliyev briefed representatives of the EBRD about the Ministry’s development of a draft hydrogen strategy concept.
"The document is devoted to conducting research work in order to develop the best technologies for the production, transportation, and storage of hydrogen," Satkaliyev noted.
Meanwhile, according to the World Bank's Greening the Economy of Europe and Central Asia (ECA) report, Kazakhstan will require about $1.15 billion of investment between 2025 and 2060 (6 percent of cumulative discounted GDP) to decarbonize its energy system to reach net-zero by 2060.
To note, Kazakhstan is developing a roadmap for the implementation of the Strategy for Achieving Carbon Neutrality until 2060. The roadmap should be the main tool for the energy transition and achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2060. In this regard, a working group has been created. More than 200 experts take part in its work.
