Kyrgyzstan highlights work progress on Kambarata HPP-1 project

BISHKEK, Kyrgyzstan, October 18. The Kyrgyz government has allocated 1.55 billion som ($18.1 million) for the Kambarata HPP-1 project, Trend reports via the statement from the Ministry of Energy of Kyrgyzstan.

According to the statement, this amount comprises 1.48 billion som ($17.3 million) designated for construction work, while the remaining funds are allocated for the project design.

The statement said that the World Bank has provided $18.6 million for the implementation of the project's feasibility study (FS).

Currently, work is underway on a trilateral intergovernmental agreement between Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan.

"The AFRY consulting company has proposed four options for the dam to date. At the first stage, the working group of the Ministry of Energy selected a concrete dam based on the conclusions of global experts. At the next stage, in May 2025, AFRY will present the dam's draft FS. Following that, the design of the dam and other works will commence," the statement explained.

Construction of the hydropower plant (HPP) is expected to begin in 2025, with the first hydro unit slated to be operational by 2028. The preliminary cost of the project is estimated to be between $4.5 billion and $5 billion, with a capacity of 1,860 MW. The Kambarata HPP-1 is expected to generate 5.6 billion kWh of electricity annually.
