South Korean President Lee Myung-bak has named Kim Kwan-jin, former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS), as his new defense minister, Lee's office Cheong Wa Dae announced Friday, as the country's military reels from North Korea's deadly artillery attack earlier this week, Yonhap reported.
The 61-year-old former Army general replaces Kim Tae-young, who is to step down to take responsibility for national security loopholes and bungling an initial response to the North's bombardment Tuesday of a border island in the Yellow Sea that left two marines and at least two civilians dead. More than a dozen others were wounded, with houses and other buildings destroyed.
