BAKU, Azerbaijan, July 25. The volume of guaranteed wheat purchased from Iranian farmers from April 10 through July 24 increased by 15 percent compared to the same period last year, the official representative of Iran's Ministry of Agriculture Sohrab Sohrabi said, Trend reports.
According to him, more than 9 million tons of wheat worth 1.57 quadrillion rials (about $3.99 billion) were purchased in the country during the mentioned period.
Sohrabi added that, considering the procurement process, the country is expected to purchase 11.5 million tons of wheat by the end of the season (September 22). This demonstrates that the country will no longer need to import wheat.
The official reported that farmers have already received 531 trillion rials, or roughly $1.35 billion. The rest of the funds will be paid in stages.
Sohrabi stressed that 1.62 million tons of wheat were purchased from Iran's Khuzestan province, 1.2 million tons from Golestan province, 820,000 tons from Fars province, 720,000 tons from Kermanshah province, and 570,000 tons from Kurdistan province.
He added that 360,000 tons of seed wheat were purchased from farmers during the period mentioned. The volume of seed wheat purchases is expected to increase to 450,000 tons.
To note, during the current Iranian year (from March 20, 2024 through March 20, 2025), 1 kilogram of wheat in Iran is purchased with a guarantee by the State Trading Company for 175,000–180,000 rials (about $4.17–$4.3).
