Iran is currently importing 700 megawatts of electricity from Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan and Armenia, deputy energy minister of Iran said.
“Late last year, we held talks with Azerbaijan to use a transfer line between the two countries to swap power,” Homayoun Haeri added, IRNA news agency reported on July 2.
“Before the hot weather arrives, we signed a memorandum of understanding with Azerbaijan to import electricity from this country in the summer and export in other seasons,” he said.
Iran is now importing 700 MW of electricity on a daily basis, including 160-180 MW from Azerbaijan, Haeri said.
“In addition to power swap with Azerbaijan, we are exporting gas to Afghanistan, Pakistan, Turkey and Iraq”.
On April 15, Iran reached an agreement with Azerbaijan to purchase 180 megawatts of electricity from the Caucasian country to prevent a potential power shortage in summer.
As per the agreement, power imports began on June 1 from Azerbaijan's electricity producer, Azerenergy JSC, for Moghan and Astara regions in northwestern Iran.
Signatories were Etibar Pirverdiyev, the head of Azerenergy JSC, and Arash Kordi, the managing director of Iran Power Generation, Distribution and Transmission Company (aka Tavanir).
