The National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC) has supplied gas to the country’s power plants as much as their gas receiving capacity in last two weeks, amid the electricity shortage.
The dispatching director of the NIGC, Mehdi Jamshidi Dana, said that the company has supplied 285 million cubic meters of gas to the power plants on a daily basis in last two weeks which is equal to the power sector’s full capacity for gas receiving, the Press Office of the National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC) reported.
In recent days, several cities in Iran including the capital Tehran have experienced rolling blackouts caused by a spike in demand for electricity in the summer heat and a shortage of water to keep power stations running.
Reportedly residents of Tehran, Kermanshah, Ardabil, and Isfahan have experienced several hours without electricity. Some provinces have announced a schedule for hours of electricity in which various districts will be without electricity for two hours every day.
Electricity shortage has also forced the Iranian administration to change work hours of the state bodies and non-governmental public institutes in capital city of Tehran, in order to save electricity.
Iranian officials say that Tehran Province’s power demand increases by about 150-200 megawatts with the rise of each degree Celsius in temperature.
Jamshid Dana said that the NIGC supplied over 67.5 billion cubic meters of gas to the country’s power plants during the last fiscal year, ended March 20.
He added that the figure was equal to 90 percent of the power plants’ fuel demand.
