Armenia to open criminal investigation into vote-buying in elections

Armenian Prosecutor General's Office will open a criminal investigation into the buying of votes in favor of "Prosperous Armenia" party in Sunday's parliamentary elections.

A man, suspected in vote-buying was arrested Sunday morning at a polling station. The arrested had notebooks with names of voters and 380 thousand drams in his bag, and another 127 thousand drams in his pocket, RIA Novosti quoted the Prosecutor General's Office spokeswoman as saying.

The spokeswoman added that two people who received a bribe were already identified.

An estimated 2.5 million Armenians were eligible to vote in parliamentary elections Sunday, which started at 8 am (0400 GMT), with President Serzh Sargsyan's Republic Party emerging as a favourite.

There are 131 seats in the National Assembly of the former Soviet republic, and voting was to end at 8 pm (1600 GMT), the Election Commission in the capital Yerevan said. Hundreds of election observers were deployed.
