The eldest son of the Libyan leader Moamer Gaddafi said early Monday that rebels had guaranteed his safety and that of his family, dpa reported.

"There is a group besieging my house, and I got from them assurances of safety for me and my family," Mohammed Gaddafi told the broadcaster Al Jazeera from his house in Libya.

"I felt sad for fighting among brothers," he said, referring to a six-month armed conflict between loyalists to his father and rebels.

The rebels said they arrested Seif al-Islam, Mohamed's half-brother.

There were no confirmed reports about the fate or whereabouts of other members of the Gaddafi family.

During the telephone interview with Mohamed Gaddafi, gunfire was heard and the contact was disrupted.

He is the son of Gaddafi from an ex-wife.
