Azerbaijan, Baku, Aug. 29 / Trend /

Today the Syrian army launched an offensive on the village Haiti, bordering Lebanon, Al Jazeera TV reported.

Mass protests in Syria began in mid-March in Dera'a in the south of the country, spreading to other regions. According to Syrian human rights activists, over 1,600 people were killed in clashes with security forces during the time.

According to authorities, since the beginning of the developments, around 500 soldiers and members of security forces were killed as a result of the "armed terrorist elements'" actions.

On Thursday, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton stated that on behalf of the European Union, Bashar al-Assad had lost legitimacy in the eyes of the Syrian people and called on him to resign.

Ashton said that the EU is preparing a new package of sanctions against the Syrian leadership. The EU supported the positions of France, Germany, Britain, and Spain.
