A suspect tin can that prompted officials to evacuate the Colosseum on Sunday was found not to contain explosives, Italian media reports said.
Experts destroyed the can as a precaution after visitors were made to exit the Ancient Roman amphitheatre, the ANSA newsagency reported.
A piece of string that emerged from the can had raised fears that it could contain a detonating device, DPA reported.
The bomb scare happened at around 5:30 pm.
On Sunday the Colosseum closes to visitors at 6:00 pm.
