Azerbaijani Intelligentsia Protests against Opening of Azerbaijani-Israeli Friendship Park in Baku

Azerbaijan, Baku, 12 May /корр. Trend J.Babayeva / Azerbaijani intelligentsia protests against opening of the Azerbaijani-Israeli friendship park in Baku, the Head of the Union of the Azerbaijani Intelligentsia, Eldaniz Guliyev, said on 12 May.

"The issue that Israel remained neutral towards UN General Assembly's adoption of the Resolution on Situation in Occupied Azerbaijani Territories as well as its efforts to present so-called 'Armenian genocide' to the discussions in the Israeli Parliament make it impossible to open the park," Guliyev said.

Opening the Azerbaijani-Israeli friendship park, which was fixed for 8 May - Independence Day of Azerbaijan, was postponed.

Karabakh Liberation Organization (KLO) protested against the opening ceremony on 8 May - anniversary of occupation of Azerbaijan's city of Shusha. In its appeal to the Foreign Ministry and Embassy of Israel, the Organization stated that holding such an event on occupation day of Shusha is unacceptable.

According to Guliyev, notwithstanding its date, the intelligentsias unanimously protest against opening of the Azerbaijani-Israeli friendship park.

Guliyev said that public resistance against Azerbaijani-Israeli friendship park accelerates.

KLO, Azerbaijan Islamic Party, Union of the Azerbaijani Intelligentsia, Center for Protection of Freedom of Religion and Speech.

Israel's Ambassador to Azerbaijan, Artur Lenk, said to Trend on 12 May that the date of opening the park has not been confirmed yet. This week Israel's Minister of Agriculture will arrive in Baku and the opening of the park will take place within the visit.
