The ancient settlements were found in the village of Chukhanli, Salyan region while laying the Alat - Astara main road, department head of the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography of the Azerbaijani National Academy of Sciences, Professor Arif Mammadov told Trend on Wednesday.

He said that archaeological research has been launched on this territory. The initial studies showed that there was a settlement and cemetery related to the ancient period and early Middle Ages. The graves built of clay and related to the I-III centuries AD were also found on the territory.

"There is nothing strange that there was an ancient settlement here," he said.

"Salyan was a territory used for berthing ships and shipping the goods," he said. "It was located on the trade and caravan route, which once led from Derbent to Ardabil. It further increased its significance."
