Georgia reduces sugar imports

In 2019, sugar imports to Georgia decreased by 13.6 percent compared to 2018 and amounted to 128,616 tons worth $50.3 million, Trend reports citing the Georgian National Statistical Office (Geostat).

According to data, sugar imports to Georgia have been declining since 2017: in 2017 it amounted to $67.6 million; in 2018 - $58.2 million; in 2019 - $50.3 million.

Brazil was the main country from which in 2018 Georgia purchased sugar in the amount of $21.3 million. In 2019, this figure dropped to 76.2 percent.

The top 3 sugar exporting countries to Georgia in 2019 include Poland – 40,800 tons worth $15.2 million, Azerbaijan – 20,258 tons worth $8.5 million, Russia – 19,056 tons worth $7.4 million.

In 2019, Georgia also imported sugar from France – 13,064 tons worth $5.4 million, from Brazil – 14,067 tons worth $5 million, from Ukraine – 10,648 tons worth $4.3 million, from Belgium – 5,977 tons worth $2.4 million, from the Netherlands – 3,312 tons worth $1.3 million, from Belarus – 1,209 tons worth $471,000, from Turkey - 119.5 tons worth $71,000.

In 2019, the external merchandise trade (excluding non-declared trade) of Georgia amounted to $12.8 billion, 2.7 percent higher year-on-year.

The exports equaled $3.7 billion (12.4 percent higher), while the imports stood at $9.1 billion (0.8 percent lower).
