Kofi Annan, the international envoy for Syria, said Tuesday that the current "unacceptable" levels of violence in Syria could lead the country into a civil war, the "consequences of which would be quite frightening", DPA reported
Annan said the deployment of ceasefire observers remained the only chance to stop the fighting. He said some 300 unarmed military observers were expected in Syria by the end of May.
He reported to the UN Security Council that a "small decrease" in the fighting had been achieved, while Damascus had committed "serious violations" of the April 12 ceasefire.
Damascus had failed to withdraw troops from populated areas and end the use of heavy weapons, he said, which are conditions required by the ceasefire. The opposition had also attacked government forces despite the ceasefire, he added.
