The world's oldest pupil, Kimani Nganga Maruge, has passed away in the Kenyan capital of Nairobi at the age of 90 after long illness, Press TV reported.
Maruge, an illiterate great-grandfather, was awarded Guinness World Record as the oldest primary school student in the world, a Press TV correspondent reported late Friday.
He grabbed global headlines when he jumped at a belated chance to educate himself soon after President Mwai Kibaki's government introduced free primary schooling in 2003 and enrolled himself at a primary school in Eldoret in 2004 at the age of 84.
He succumbed to stomach cancer, which was diagnosed last February. He underwent surgery, but his health had since deteriorated.
His family and friends say Maruge has been an inspiration for many, using his famous phrase 'never too late' in life to encourage others in education.
