On August 5, the OSCE Chairperson-in-Office, Foreign Minister of Greece Dora Bakoyannis contacted by telephone with her counterparts from Azerbaijan Elmar Mammadyarov and Armenia Edward Nalbandyan to discuss the settlement process in Nagorno-Karabakh, the press service of the Foreign Ministry of Greece said, RIA Novosti reported.

"Discussions were held over the recent events in the South Caucasus and the progress of negotiations on Nagorno-Karabakh. Foreign Minister used this opportunity to express support of the Greek chairmanship for the OSCE efforts to enhance peace and stability in the region," said the Foreign Ministry of Greece.

On August 4, a monitoring was conducted in line of contact between the armed forces of Armenia and Azerbaijan, with the mandate of Bakoyannis's personal representative. The observers did not record breaks.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Azerbaijan lost all of Nagorno-Karabakh except for Shusha and Khojali in December 1991. In 1992-93, Armenian armed forces occupied Shusha, Khojali and 7 districts surrounding Nagorno-Karabakh. Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group - Russia, France, and the U.S. - are currently holding the peace negotiations.
