The funeral of the Chairman of the Iraqi Islam Supreme Council Sayyed, Abdul Aziz al-Hakim, has been held at the country's embassy in Tehran, Trend reported citing the Iranian news agency, Fars.
Iranian and Iraqi officials attended the funeral. The ceremony took place at the Iraqi Embassy in Tehran at 09:00 on Aug. 27. Hakim's body will be taken to the Iraqi city of Najaf, passing through the cities of Basra, Divaniyya, Baghdad and Karbala. Hakim's body will be buried in the city of Najaf.
Hakim had suffered from lung cancer since 2007. Since 2009 he had been undergoing chemotherapy in Iran. On Aug. 23 2009, Hakim was taken to a Tehran hospital in a critical condition. Hakim had led the influential Shia party in Iraq since 2003.
