Frost Spoils ‘Cardinal’ Type of Grape in West of Azerbaijan

Mammadov/ In 2008, the drop in the grape harvest is expected in West of Azerbaijan because of the freezing weather conditions in January, Famil Sharifov, the scientist said to the regional correspondent of Trend in Ganja on 13 February. "The samples of grapes from the fields revealed that the 'Cardinal' type of grape is spoiled by the frost," the scientist said.

At present, the 'Cardinal' type of the sown grapes in the region, accounts 5% of the harvest.

According to Sharifov, in January, the temperature went down 16 -17 degrees below zero in the high-level regions spoiling the domestic types of grapes, as the imported types of the grapes are more persistent to the cold weather conditions.

The scientist said that the studies will be completed in 10 days and results of the study shall show that to what extent the frost has affected the harvest of grapes.
