Transshipment of dry cargo by the Baku International Sea Trade Port increased by 76 percent due to rise in import of cement and cement clinkers into Azerbaijan, a source at the port told Trend on Tuesday.
He said in total dry cargo terminal of the port handled 114,000 tons of goods, which is 76 percent more than January 2011.
Iran supplied cement and cement clinkers.
According to the State Statistics Committee, in 2011 Azerbaijan imported 1.83 million tons of cement and cement clinkers, which is 14.5 percent more than the same figure of 2010.
Cement and cement clinkers last year were imported in the amount of $93.75 million, showing a 22.6-percent increase compared to 2010.
Cement production in Azerbaijan in 2011 hit about 1.44 million tons, or 12.4 percent more than in 2010.
At present, Azerbaijan has one cement factory [Garadagh Cement]. Construction of new plants for cement production is currently underway to meet the country's needs in cement and reduce dependence on import.
